Title: The Eating Away of Holiday Spirit
Artist: Anonymous Toddler
Curator’s Note:
Almost as a signal to the coming holiday, this street artist carefully constructs and demonstrates the ways in which the traditional motif of love for others during the holidays, has, yet again, been co-opted by corporate giants. Notice how the artist “peers down” on the broken holiday cookies, as if to say, “Humanity looks down on all attempts of perfection and cheer.”
It is as if the artist wants us to note that the cookies, while festive looking, are in fact, imperfect. The green sugar cookie, decorated with haphazard sprinkles, or the colloquial term in Pittsburgh “Jimmies,” is in fact missing the top portion of the tree. This is a nod to the destructive nature surrounding the commercialization of the holidays.
