Things I didn’t know as a kid, but found out as an adult:

  • Cheese is not my friend.
  • Some people can’t change.
  • My third-grade essay on wanting to be a clown when I grew up was on target.
  • Saying that you will never do something is usually a guarantee that “never” will turn into “someday.” Examples: “I will never get married.” “I will never move south of PA.” “I will never eat meat again.”
  • Sometimes, paying bills feels good.
  • The fact that no one in my family tried to convince me to do something other than poetry when I went away to college was a huge gift.
  • It’s ok to ask for help.
  • One day, I will be the owner of a lush mane of elbow hair, but only on my right elbow.
  • Someday, I will say the same, but different things, my parents said when they were in their forties. Ex: “When I was a kid…” “I just don’t understand pop music these days.” “Remember when my elbow didn’t have a ton of hair on it?”
  • Ordinary moments, throughout the day, can be some of the most meaningful.
  • Family is never perfect, for anyone.
  • Being sensitive is a positive trait.
  • Going to museums with my grandparents shaped me in ways I couldn’t understand when I was younger.
  • It’s really hard to get pregnant.
